Alexandre Song....Arsenal's new midfield guardian

Arsene Wenger has received much criticism for his refusal to go into the transfer market to purchase defensive minded players. Many critics believe the lack of a high quality defensive midfielder is hindering Arsenal from achieving major success. Wenger continues to ignore the critics and has pleaded with the supporters to have patience. He feels confident that the young players that are currently playing for the club are more than capable if given time to mature. He constantly defended his decision by expressing that buying players would only reduce the confidence and trust he has placed in players such as Diaby, Denilson and Song. This season there are less negative voices about Song and he is now regarded as an effective player to inherit the place of Arsenal great Patrick Vieara. Song was originally a Centre Back and was placed in the midfield as an answer to the large number of injuries Arsenal experienced last season. His successful adaption to his role has given him a firm position in the starting line up and it may be some time before we see him playing in the back four again.

Song's journey started in Douala, Cameroon where he grew up in an extended family that included 24 siblings, he had little recollection of his father who died when he was three. At the age of eight his Uncle financed his migration to France, where he was reunited with his mother in Paris. Song enjoyed playing football in his neighourhood. His family soon moved to a larger house that was close to a football stadium that belonged to the club, Red Star Saint Quen. During a pre season game for the club, Song attracted the attention of the manager from Division 1 side Bastia. There he played his football and was mentored by his manager Francois Ciccolini until he was scouted and signed by Arsenal. During his time at Arsenal he spent a year on loan at Charlton. He is now the Wenger's first team defensive midfield choice.

Last season we saw the emergence of his adaption into his new role. In the latter part of the season he seemed composed holding up the ball and and stopping plays with well timed interceptions. He remained humble and continued to shine despite praises. He gave the back four and supporters alike relief that there was some protection in midfield. Wenger's two other options Denilson and Diaby were much more comfortable going forward than playing defensively. Song seemed to be more happy with his role in the midfield and rose to the opportunity. Last season there was only one weakness. He lacked the ability to effectively distribute the ball in attack. He would courageously win the ball, only to give it back to the opponents because he failed to pass the ball successfully to his team mates. It was very frustrating to watch and made the critics continue to call for more suitable reinforcements.

This season Arsenal has started the season on a bang thanks to the return of creative midfielder Rosicky and a new 3-3-4 tactic that allows captain Cesc Fabregas to go forward to join up with main striker Robin Van Persie and two supporting players on each wing. Fabregas's forward movement is supported by Song and Diaby playing a protecting role, ensuring that the back four has some support during attacks. The result has been some high flying fluent passing ending up with multi shots on goal and high scoring results. Song has improved rapidly in his second season as a first team player. Witnessing his performances on the pitch it is evident that he has worked extremely hard in the summer break. The main change is his passing has improved greatly. Song now passes the ball almost as well as his more technical team mates. In the recent match against Birmingham City his pass to RVP led to Arsenal's opening goal and through out the game he played killer passes from the midfield that had Birmingham's defense on guard. Song's defensive skills has also improved, Wenger and supporters are amazed with his ability to rid opponents of the ball without drawing fouls. This is compliments Arsenal's style of play perfectly because it allows the game to continue fluently. Song has gradually become an integral role in the Arsenal midfield and I expect him to continue to improve throughout the season.

El Diablo from Ecuador...Valencia moves to Old Trafford

Wigan Athletic has been one of those mid table teams that have successfuly brought in promising players that evenutually attract the top teams in the Premiership. The likes of Heskey, Palacios are some to name a few. The most recent player to leave the club is none other than Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia who has been on Manchester Utd's manager Sir Alex Ferguson's radar for a number of season's. After recieving 80 million pounds from the purchase of midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo, Ferguson immediately contacted Wigan about purchasing the South American. A fee estimated around 17 million was agreed and Valencia was soon wearing the red and black Jersey in a preseason friendly against Boca Juniors.

The 24 yr old Ecuadorian started his European Career in Spain signing with Villareal but was then loaned out to Recreativo and then to Wigan in the Premiership. His loan spell at Wigan impressed the coaching staff enough for them to approach Villareal for the midfielder's permanent signature. A fee was agreed and Valencia became a marquee figure in the Wigan team. His pace and strength trouble defenders and his crosses were perfect for lurking forwards upfront. The only weakness in his game seems to be his lack of goal scoring. During his time at Wigan, Valencia only scored 6 goals in 47 appearances. There were also periods during his stay when he experienced injury set backs. During his three seasons at Wigan he racked up assists and admirers alike. Wigan's managerial staff knew that it would only be a matter of time before a bigger club would set their goal on signing the player. Their only hope would be that they would be able to make a substantial profit if an offer came in.

Valencia is now a Utd player and has already impressed Ferguson with his display during his pre-season run outs. He caused markers many problems in his debut in a friendly match against Boca and managed to get himself on the score sheet with an impressive individual display in front of goal that caught both Boca defenders and the goal keeper off guard. He then continued where he left off in a friendly match against Valencia at Old Trafford. Valencia turned on the after burners in the second half of the friendly demonstrating his skillsl on the right side of the field. He beat defenders with his pace and strength and placed dangerous crosses, as well as going inside and taking a well placed shot on goal. Two of his crosses earned him two assists, and contributed to the two winning goals in the game. The first, a well placed crossed into the box that was met by the head of striker Wayne Rooney. The second a quick low cross that caused havoc in the box and allowed a reserve squad player to take the opportunity of the chaos and find himself on the score sheet.

Judging from the pre-season performances it would seem that Ferguson has found himself a winner. A player that will be able to service forwards such as Rooney, Owen and Berbatov with crosses that will increase scoring opportunities. A well placed cross is extremely dangerous, because Utd midfield players are always looking for an opportunity to pounce when opponents defenses are scrambling to gain possession of the ball. Under the training tutelage of the Utd Staff Valencia could transform into an attacking option also. Wigan being a smaller team may play more cautious with the hope of not conceding goals, this could have hindered Valencia's shooting opportunities. This preseason has already shown that Valencia has an accurate foot and the ability to strike shots on goal. His new found freedom with Utd could see him becoming more of a goal scoring threat and help Ferguson regain some of the goal scoring chances that were lost with the departures of both Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. In fact he scored 20 goals in 84 appearances in South America before he moved to Europe. Valencia is definitely a player to watch in the upcoming season.

Dreams of Dominance...Real Madrid's New Make Over

Real Madrid arguably the greatest and most successful club in the World is no stranger to changes. Throughout the club's history there has been widespan changes in both on and off the pitch. The Club president, manager, players and coaching staff have all been axed and replaced at the change of the tides. This upcoming season is no different. The club ended last season by reassigning former club President Florentino Perez and he has already went on a massive spending spree that has brought in the extradordnary players in the likes of Ronaldo, Kaka, Albiol and Benzema for astounding transfer fees ranging from 35 million pounds to a record figure of 80 million pounds for Ronaldo.

These players and those existing players who are fortunate not to see themselves on the transfer market will be plying for Spanish and European glory under the watchful eyes of new appointed manager Pellegrini as well as advisor and former club player Zidane. The football world has been turned upside down as Real has made it clear that they are not through signing and have mentioned that Liverpool's Alonso, Valencia's David Silva and Munich's Ribiery are potential candidates to join the club. The football world awaits to see if this amazing array of talent will deliver total European domination next season.

Before we look at the astounding abundance of talent that has arrived to ply their trade on the pitch we must first look at the man whose job entail setting the right tactics and controlling egos. This is the manager Manuel Pellegrini, the Chilian who after spending time developing his managerial skills in clubs across South America came to Spain and transformed a fairly new football team Villareal into a regular slot in the Champions League moving them into the knock out stages and semi finals in the 05/06 season. He did this with limited resources and implementing strict discipline that saw top rated club player Riquelme stting on the sidelines because he refused to play by Pellegrini's rules. He has the second most successful win rate of a South America managing in Europe. Former Real Madrid manager Luxemburgo being the first.

Pellegrini now has the ardous task to keep Real boardroom and supporters happy with entertaining victories. Many managers in the past such as England's National Manager, Cappello have learned that one must entertain and win if one wants to remain in charge of the Los Blancos. With Ronaldo and Kaka around Pellegrini should be able to successfully undergo this taks since he is known for his preference for attacking free flowing football and has been dubbed the "Arsene Wenger" of La Liga. Pellegrini also brings the type of discipline needed to control players of high calibre. He has shown in the past that a players ability will not stop him from disciplining a player if he is not working for the team. This may however cause him problems because since Real and the players are much bigger he may recieve pressure from the board and supporters to play players because they want to be entertained.

Looking at the purchases Real Madrid has managed to pull off so far one cannot help but feel excited about this team. The club knows its influence on the world of football and has been successful in unsettling top players all across Europe due to the fact it is the dream of almost every player to don the white and black kit of Real. Last Summer after winning the Domestic and European title, attacking phenomenon Cristiano Ronaldo made it clear that he wanted out of Manchester Utd, to pursue his and his mother's dream of him joining the Spanish giants. Ferguson and Manchester Utd refused and held on to him for another season hoping that continued success and attention would change his mind. Ronaldo however after losing the Champions League Final to Barcalona, decided his career in England was over and he would plan his revenge against Barca in the El Classico.

Ronaldo will bring with him his awesome ability to attack. Real will benefit from his fluent ability to move past defenders and take shots on goal. Also his aerial and free kicking capabilities. It should be interesting to see how he adapts to the Spanish game, he should be more free since attacking players are given more time on the ball than in Spain. Kaka will be a key figure in this new Real team, he may ply his trade as a playmaking central midfielder or play in a more attacking position perhaps twinning Ronaldo on the wing. His ability to create magic on the pitch will have the Real home crowd in exstacy next season.

Kaka like Ronaldo is a top player and has had the title of the World's Best awarded to him. It was once thought that Kaka would remain at another European giant AC Milan until last season's January window came and the new wealth of Manchester City dissolved the trust that the club and their marquee player had. An astounding transfer bid was accepted for financial purposes and Kaka was almost forced to leave his beloved Milan to play for a team that had no chances of playing in the Champions League in the upcoming season. In the end Kaka remained at Milan but the damage was done, and with his AC Milan's manager Ancelotti leaving to take up a Job at Chelsea, Kaka jumped at the opportunity to join the Los Galacticos and became their second signing for the summer.

With all this extra firepower listed aboved Real needed to fill a defensive void. The end of the season saw the departure of central defender Cannavaro who decided to return to his former club Juve. Real then decided to turn their eyes on Spanish defender Raul Albiol from Valencia. Real knew that Valencia is experiencing finacial difficulties and would be open to the transfer. Albiol is a regular player in Spain's national team and can be used either as a centre back or a defensive midfielder.

The latest piece of Real's puzzle is striker, Karim Benzema. The soon to be former Lyon man has been at sought after from top clubs such as Arsenal, Barcalona and Manchester Utd. He chose to remain at Lyon until Real became interested in acquiring his talents. He recently stated that it was always his dream to play for Real and when the opportunity came to play with world players Kaka and Ronaldo he could not say no to the offer. Benzema will be expected to take full advantage of the midfield talents of Ronaldo and Kaka, latching on to passes, crosses and doing what he does best, scoring beautiful goals.

Just as a number of players are set to realize their dream come true to play for the Los Blancos, others are starting to realize their own is coming to an end. This weekend Perez released a statement announcing that at least ten players will have to make way for the new entries. THe most likey candidates to leave will be the large array of Dutch players that have made their way to Real under former manager Schuster. Players like Drenthe, Van De Vaart, Robben, Nistelrooy, Huntelaar could all see themselves at a new club. The new arrivals will most likely be partnered with Spanish players like Ramos, Raul, Torres and others such as Diarra, Pepe, Marcelo and Higuain. I am definitely excited to see how this experiment will turn out, will it be a successful haul of trophies unlike the last superstar line up of Zindane, Figo, Beckham and the other Ronaldo, is yet to be seen.

Champions League Semi Finals Preview: Arsenal VS Manchester Utd

Once again the masters of football have blessed us with an exciting semi final tie in the Champions League. Football fans all over England and the world alike have been sleepless for weeks waiting for Wednesday night when Champions Manchester Utd take on their most arch rivals for the first time in a Champions League meeting. This tie will see the clashing of masterminds, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Utd's guard Sir Alex Ferguson plot their way to the Champion's League finals in Rome in the following weeks. We will witness some of the world's greatest veterans and young players battle on the pitch to take down their opponents. Attacking talents like Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Tevez and Berbatov against the likes of Adebayor, Samir Nasri, Eduardo and Walcott. Midfield wars between Cesc Fabregas, Song and Diaby against Ryan Giggs, Park Ji Song and Scholes. Defenders such as Vidic and Ferdinand plying their trade in competition with Toure and Sagna. It will be a fight till death and will probably go down as one of the most exciting semi finals in the CL's history if we look at the epic battles these teams have had in the past. This season Arsenal has already drew first blood with a 2-1 victory thanks to Premiership freshman Samir Nasri's double. It was an open game of football that saw both sides pressing at each others defense with fluent attacking moves that mesmerised supporters and neutrals alike.

Since then Utd have gone on to dominating the league and topping the tables,. This was due largely to their record breaking defense partnership of centre backs Ferdinand and Vidic who provided a protective wall for their goal keeper Van de Sar. Utd also benefited largely from the faith Ferguson put in his veteran midfielders Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, who used their experiece and leadership to pull the team through difficult times during the season. In the mean while Arsenal had a bumpy Premiership season with key players residing on the bench for long periods due to injury. Two such players, newly appointed captain Cesc Fabregas and striker Emmanuel Adebayor were greatly missed and reserve players Denilson and Bendtner had to fill in heavily for their absence. The team however began to gel after a embarrassing loss to Manchester City in the dying parts of 08 and have went on a whopping 20 game unbeaten run that saw them dismantle relegation battling Middlesborough yesterday 2-0. This was the first time manager Arsene Wenger has managed to take full points from a game managed by Middlesborough's manager Southgate in the league and this could provide even more positive energy in the camp. At the moment Utd lies at the top of the premiership table with Arsenal placed at 4th looking to finish 3rd against Chelsea.

Looking at the players that maybe on display I cannot wait to see what the outcome of the tie will be. Focusing on Arsenal the key for them will be to score goals in the first leg at Old Trafford while at the same time not conceding to the potent attack of Utd that has perfected the art of pressuring and closing down on opponents to the point that they make mistakes. Arsenal will need to have a strong display from midfield, meaning that Cameroonian defensive midfielder Song should be on his A game on Weds if selected to ensure that Utd attacking options are neutralized before they pounce upon the defensive line. I expect Fabregas and Nasri to provide the playmaker role using their passing skills to execute throughballs that could open up Utd's defense which has been looking a bit unstable of late. The main man upfront I expect will be Adebayor who may play as lone strike man or partnered with Eduardo who Arsene seems to have been keeping under wraps during the last couple of weeks. Another option could be for Diaby or Fabregas to play just behind Ade in a supporting striker role and take advantage of his ability to hold the ball and draw defenders out of position. On the attacking right wing Theo Walcott should be a great asset , his speed and skill should give LB Evra a hard time and may force him into a more defensive role and cut off his forward runs. Walcott will need to concentrate on his final ball, knowing when to make the cross into the box and when to shoot. This has been a weakness of his developing game and could be a determining factor in the tie.

Defense wise is where Arsenal show some cracks that Utd could take advantage of. Veteran CB Gallas is out with a knee injury for the remaining of the season and either Silvestre or Djourou are expected to start in his place. Silvestre will be relishing facing his former team mates and club but has shown over the recent weeks that he does not have the pace to keep up with fast paced attackers and could be target for Rooney and Ronaldo to focus their attacks on. Djourou has grown over the season to become a reliable option but is suffering with a knee injury and may not be fully fit against some of the most potent attack forces in the World. There is also the issue of the LWB position. Regular starter Gael Clichy is injured and Arsenal are now relying on youth player Keiran Gibbs to take up the role. Gibbs has shown that he has great talent and seems to be adapting to first team play well, however his task will be an ardous one with the young Englishman expected to closely defend the World's greatest player Cristiano Ronaldo. Gibbs is no slouch and has proven that he can defend as well as move forward in attack. His forward movements could give Ronaldo trouble, but he must be aware that no one is more lethal in counter attacking than the Portuguese.

Utd also have many strengths and some weaknesses that could determine the outcome. In the first leg there job first, will not to concede goals, however they have a habit of attacking early on to gain a goal and then close shop. In attack they have a number of options that can do the job.The main player is winger Cristiano Ronaldo, however I expect him to be in a more supporting role in the tie. I think Ronaldo will be expected to draw defenders out of position and then send the ball towards his team mates in hope that one may latch onto the ball to score. I expect Rooney to also be working ardously covering the field filling in gaps where necessary such as cutting off Walcott's access to the defensive line. I believe that if a goal is scored by Utd in open play it will more likely to be scored from a midfielder such as Giggs, Carrick or Scholes the assist coming from wing play. In the middle of the park I expect a partnership of a veteran and a younger player. So either Giggs and Scholes will be partnered with Carrick, Anderson or Fletcher. I do not expect Utd to put both veterans on at the same time because Sir Alex will be more than aware of the fitness levels of Wenger's youthful team. The midfield partnership will have the dual role of setting the tempo of the game as well as bringing a physical presence in the middle to unsettle Arsenal's midfield.

Looking at the defensive options I believe Utd's defense looks pretty solid except in the right back position. The return of Ferdinand from injury has stabilized Utd's defensive woes of late. His anticipation of attack along side the brutal physical game of Vidic will provide Adebayor and company frustrating times infront of goal. Patrice Evra as I mentioned earlier may have take a more subdued role so as not to leave his line open for the pace and new found strength of Theo Walcott. In the RB position Utd have loss their two main options, captain Gary Neville and John Oshea to injuries and will now have to decide to use either Brazilian teenager Raphael or Wes Brown who has just returned from injury. Raphael has proven himself like Gibbs to be a future starter and was the sole Utd player to find the net against Arsenal in their last game. With Arsenal players growing in confidence and stature. left midfielder Samir Nasri may pressure him throughout the game. Wes Brown on the other hand is an enigma and his contribution to the game depends on his concentration level. He could have a man of the match performance or make a howler that could cost his team the tie.

Now my thoughts about the upcoming game. I am almost 100% sure that Arsenal will go to Old Trafford to attack and score goals. That is Wenger and the Arsenal way, with even more incentive of gaining an away goal that could aid them into going through in the second leg. Utd may have other plans and Ferguson has utilized defensive stagnant football in the past as means to the end. This game will be dependent on an opening goal. I believe that if a goal is scored early to Arsenal we will have ourselves quite a spectacle with both teams going on the score sheet. If the early goal is Utd's I expect them to kill the game off with defensive tactics, while Arsenal would push to get back on level terms. If there are no early goals, both teams could be take a more cautious approach carefully plotting away to chip away the defense line to score. This is a hard tie to predict, but as an Arsenal fan I am going with Arsenal winning and moving on. This youthful Arsenal squad are big team killers and appear to be at their best against top opposition. The fact that they are no longer in the FA Cup and made the effort not to over exhilerate themselves in their match against Middlesborough shows that they are looking towards Weds as their only means of achieving silverware this year. Arsenal's captain Cesc Fabregas looks focused and has already tasted victory last summer with his national team and looks hungry for more. Arsene Wenger also relishes to chance to lift the trophy that always seems to elude him. This is not to say Utd will make the task easy, however Utd still have to maintain form if they are to win the premiership with Liverpool, another team that has nothing else to lose creeping on their steps. Utd are more can capable than balancing the act as they have shown in the past, but I feel that Arsenal will be a proficient opponent to stop their European hopes.

Champions League Preview prt 2, Arsenal Vs Villareal

The next match we will be previewing is the match up between Spanish team popularly known as the yellow submarines taking on Arsenal. This should be a great tie because both managers , Wenger and Pelligrini are known to stick to their principles despite opposition and always look towards playing an open, entertaining game of football. Both teams rely on fluid movements in midfield and potent attack forces. At the moment both teams also mirror each other in their respective leagues, both Arsenal and Villareal are in 4th position and are in an uphill battle to earn CL placement next season. These two met some years ago in the semi finals resulting in Arsenal winning by a 1-0 aggregate that sent them into the Champions League Finals. There has been some interesting changes since that time. One of the key figures in the Arsenal line up at the time Pires is now a member of the Villareal team, also most of the players in the Arsenal line up during that time have moved on to other leagues. The Arsenal team is almost completely different with developing young stars replacing the likes of legends Henry, Pires and Lmunberg.

Focusing on key players we will start with Arsenal. Arsenal will be hoping that their captain and master in the midfield Cesc Fabregas will be match fit to contribute to the tie. Fabregas despite being under the age of 25 is one of the world's best central midfielders and possesses the intelligence and ability to change games with precise passes. He has been out with a knee injury since December and is itching to return to ensure that Arsenal repeat their success in reaching to the CL Finals. If Cesc is fully fit, the heart of Arsenal's midfield will possess quality that will place less pressure on the attack force. In defensive midfield position I am expecting to see developing star Diaby partnered with Cesc. Diaby is gradually improving in his defensive holding role and is a potent force when he moves forward towards goal. On the wings I am sure Arsene will also be hoping that his young Englishman Theo Walcott is available so that he can utilize his quick pace to break down Villa's defensive line. Samir Nasri will also be expected to use his playmaking skills to push infront to service the strike force. Fullbacks Clichy and Sagna will be running forward pushing pressure on Villa to defend and provide crosses into the box for the likes of Adebayor and Van Persie. Both strikers are important in their own right. RVP being more technical and can provide free kicks and innovative shots on goal. Adebayor's strengths will be his strength and pace that will have the like former gunner Cygan and Capdevila busy, opening up spaces for his team mates. Arsenal will also have to rely on top performances from CB Toure, Gallas and goal keeper Almunia to ensure safe berth to the semi final's.

Villareal are also a force to be reckoned with and will not be a walk in the park for Arsenal. In attack I expect to see Italian american Giuseppe Rossi, Spanish foward Llorente and Mexican Franco provide lethal attacking arsenal. Franco caused Manchester Utd defense quite a few problems during the group stages making Utd a bit lucky not to have conceded to the yellow submarines. Franco plays with a bit of flamboyance and sometimes is able to pull off amazing stunt moves on goal. Rossi is a former Utd player that has made a name for himself in Spain as a lethal attacker. Spanish forward Llorente should also play a significant role having scored 4 goals in the competition this season. In the midfield their is the experience of former gunner playmaker Robert Pires and defensive midfield stalwart Sienna. Pires game has changed much since leaving Arsenal. During his first season with the submarines he was hampered by a foot injury which resulted in him losing some of the mobility he became recognized for playing left midfield for Arsenal. Like Giggs at Utd, Pelligrini has moved Robert into a more central role relying on his talents to control the passing in midfield. Sienna is more than effective in his defensive midfield position providing a halt to any attacking tactic. He is also deadly in deadball positions and the team can rely on him, their captain to step up to the ball when free kicks or penalties are awarded. In defense Villa have the much improved Cygan, and Capdevila to help provide protection.

Verdict: I am predicting this will be an open tie, due to both managers passion for attacking football. I think we should be seeing more than a couple goals. I think Arsenal have the edge with so much of their key players such as Fabregas, Walcott and Eduardo returning with eagerness to make up for time spent on the injury table. Where Villa could trouble Arsenal is during set plays. Despite massive improvement since the early period of the season, Arsenal is still troubled by free kicks or corners entering into the box. If Pelligrini can use this to his advantage he may be able to gain revenge on Arsenal.

Champions League Rd of Eight Preview

As the months roll by the CL Final in Rome is drawing closer with only 8 teams left in contention in the knock out stages. Similar to last year the English Prem teams have made a statement with four teams, Manchester Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal all reaching the last 8. They are joined by two La Liga representatives Barca and Villa Real. The final two teams Bayern Munich and FC Porto hail from Germany and Portugal respectively. The draw has created some interesting match ups and so I am taking the time to give my two cents on what the outcome maybe. Here is the round of eight knockout stage tie preview, enjoy.

Liverpool Vs. Chelsea: Once more Prem rivals Liverpool and Chelsea meet each other in the knockout stages. Since the arrival of Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benetiz, both teams have become well acquinted with each other in Champions League. Mourinho has left but he left a legacy with inthe rivalry that the supporters ensured the teams carry on. Last season interim Chelsea manager Avram Grant saw off Liverpool to reach the finals in Moscow and it seems that Liverpool is more than willing to return the favour come April. Matches between the teams were usually boring and tactical during Mourinho's reign but since Grant and his replacement Scolari entered the picture the games have taken a more entertaining open approach. New manager Gus Hiddink is now in charge of Chelsea and we will now have to wait to see what approach he plans to utilize. If it is anything like the performance of the other team he manages Russia we can expect some nice flowing attack minded football. At the moment both teams are currently competing for second place position in the Prem and this could only stir the embers to make this contes memorable.

When we look for key players we can see quite a few. Liverpool will expect it dynamic attacking duo, Spanish striker Fernando Torres and their English captain Steven Gerrard to provide that well need attacking prowess infront of goal. Both players are extremely skilled in attack and can pull off even the most audacious of shots. In support the highly effective dutchman Dirk Kuyt and Spanish winger Riera will be providing added attacking support from the flanks. In the heart the midfield I would expect the services of Alonso and Argentine defensive midfielder Mascherano to provide a shield for the defense line that should include veteran Carragher and talented youth Skretel. Liverpool at the moment are in splendid form and are full of confidence after they dismantled Spain powerhouse Real Madrid to reach the final eight and then went on to destroy Prem leaders Manchester Utd on their home ground Old Trafford.

Chelsea also have a few show stoppers in their arsenal. The Chelsea squad is very organized and relies on players that have years of experience to go along with their talent. In attack they will be looking towards former Afrcian player of the year Didier Drogba to use his physical presence and ball control break down Liverpool's defense line. He may have prolific goal scoring French marksman Nicholas Anelka upfront as a partner. In midfield we see a number of intersting options as Chelsea has some of the best midfield options in Europe. Key figures like Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and Michael Ballack can all cause havoc from the middle. New manager Hiddink has shown signs that he prefers to use Ghanan midfield star Essien in a more attacking role and this could provide the key to Chelsea cracking open the shrewd tactacs of Liverpool's manager Benitez. Chelsea's backline is also one of the safest in Europe with central defenders, captain John Terry partnering with either Brazilian Centre Alex or Portugal's Carvalho in the middle. Chelsea has in their possession one of the most proven shot stopppers their goal keeper Peter Cech. Chelsea had to work hard in the previous round to overcome Italian giants Juventus.

Verdict: Looking both teams I think one is close to call, it could be a defensive mistake or even extra time penalties that could determine the final outcome of this tie. I think both teams will be looking to cancel each other out and the only way the game may open up is if an early goal is scored. Judging on recent form one could say Liverpool has the edge. However we are now on an international break and we have no idea how this could affect the players physically and emotionally when they return. Both teams have incentives to move forward in the competition. Chelsea is still bitter from the penalty shoot out loss in last year's finals. Liverpool is at the moment extremely confident after they convincingly took apart Manchester Utd the holders of the cup and argueably the best team in the world. Torres and Gerrard are hungry this season for silverware and seem to be making that extra effort that ensures success throughout the season. Chelsea coach Hiddink is known for being a successful cup competition coach, but the same can be said about Benitez. This match up should be interesting on and off the pitch since the outcome will be either based upon on tactical masterminding or great individual contribution. I am going to jump off the fence and predict Liverpool advancing to the final four.

Next we will look at Arsenal Vs. Villareal

Relentless pursuit of excellence...Eduardo Da Silva

In August 2006 Arsenal's manager Arsene Wenger witness a player score the first European goal at the team's new home the Emirates Stadium. He was so impressed with the player that he contacted the players club Dinamo Zagreb on the his availability. The request was successful and the player moved from Croatia to the English premiership to fill an attacking void left by Arsenal's most potent striker the legendary Theirry Henry. Little was known of this player and critics had a field day questioning Wenger's transfer decision. I too had my doubts and decided to look for videos on the player. My research made me a believer and I was almost certain the player would lay his mark on Arsenal for season's to come.

This player is Eduardo and many have learned what an awe inspiring individual this player is on and off the pitch. His debut season was cut short by an devastating injury just over a year ago that led many to believe he would never return back to the potential he had. He with the help of Arsenal's outstanding medical staff proved naysayers wrong when he returned and scored two goals in his first team debut and went on to score on of the most brilliant volley goals of the season. Anyone who questioned his skill before his strike on Cardiff's goal have fell silent in reverence to skills be possesses. It was a beacon to the Premiership that Eduardo is back and in deadly form.

Eduardo is a rare breed in modern football. A player with amazing talent but does not carry himself with arrogance. He is a natural goal scorer, a poacher like Real Madrid's Van Nistelrooy. He is a striker in and out also possesses the pace and footwork skill to ply his trade on the wing servicing the attack. Place a the ball close to goal and he is almost certain to score. He displays composure in front of goal which even top strikers in the world fail to possess for years. Once the ball is at his feet in front of goal it is as if time stops, defenders and goal keepers try their hardest to put him off his game to no avail, he simply brushes their distractions aside and focuses on his only target, the back of the net. He possesses the quickness and intelligence to make it look easy to score. Simple tap ins, headers, shots outside the box, volleys and bicycle kicks have all been utilized to achieve his goal. What happens next is usually more amazing. Eduardo hardly partakes in extravagant celebrations that modern players are now known for. He intead just issues a smile a nod and presses towards getting himself back in position to continue the game. It was only since his return that he has been celebrated his goals with devour pushing players and obstacles out of his way during his first team returning goal to console his team doctor, thanking him for bringing him back to full health.

The 5ft 9 striker was born in Rio De Janiero, Brazil and developed his talent at a club in his neighbourhood Bantu. In 1999 scouts from Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb were in Brazil looking for talent and came upon on the talented Brazilian. He was taken to the club on trial and eventually became a part of the youth squad. He made his debut in the first team in 2001 but was then loaned out to a second division Croatian club Inter Zapresic in the following season. His time on loan was successful and he scored an impressive 10 goals in just 15 appearances. This resulted in him being recalled back to Dinamo where he earned his place in the first team line up. He began to be known for scoring goals and setting up assists. He scored 18 goals in 18 appearances consecutively in the 06-07 season and led his team to 2 Crotian league titles and placements in European competitions.

During his time in Croatia he also decided to take up citizenship and joined the Croatian youth team in under 21 team in 02. He made 12 appearances and scored 8 goals. It was not long before he was called up to the senior team and after 06 WC which he did not participate in he began to play an integral role in their new managers attacking strategy. He has made 23 appearances and scored 13 goals. His National manager Slaven Bilic made it clear that the team were at a disadvantage without their top striker due to his season ending injury.

In the summer of 07 Arsenal purchased Eduardo for 7.5 million pds and he became immediately involved in the clubs preseason friendly cup matches. He scored his first goal in a Gunners shirt in a 2-1 win against Italian side Lazio in the pre-seaon Amsterdam Cup. He then made his season debut in August against Blackburn as a substitute in a 1-1 draw. His first competitive goal came in European qualifier competition against Sparta Prague. He then went on to gradually adjust into his new team making cameo appearances in domestic cup matches. It was not until the Christmas period of last season that Eduardo began to become a regular fixture in the Arsenal first time premiership line up. Injuries to main striker Robin Van Persie created an opportunity for him to become a starting striker and he grasped it open handedly. He went on to score a series of important goals for Arsenal until his leg was broken by a reckless tackle on the 23rd of February. It immediately ended his season and left him 12 goals and 8 assist in 31 appearances.

There was great worry that he would not be able to participate at a high level after the injury, but this was put to rest during practice matches during team training. The players internal drive and determination along with the incredible work of Arsenal's medical staff brought Eduardo back to the pitch in awe inspiring form. Eduardo scored a hat trick against his team mates in private match and then went on to improve in the reserves. He returned back to his national team in February and gave an winning assist. His return to the first team line up despite being recieving a number of set backs due to niggling injuries has been impressive. He has scored 3 goals in 2 appearances including a a volley from the outside of his foot against Prem hopefuls Burnsley in the FA Cup that is touted as one of the best goals ever excecuted. There is no question that he has returned even stronger than before and will contribute to the remaining Arsenal's season. It gives me great joy to see Eduardo return, I remember the fateful day when I witnessed his injury on my screen and prayed that he would recover, I was overjoyed when I saw him leap in the air to head the ball into the net in the FA Cup replay against Cardiff. It showed that with great determination and good spirits even the most destructable of obstacles can be overcome and one can continue onwards in the relentless pursuit of excellence. Welcome back Eduardo we missed you dearly.

The heart of Anfield...Captain Fantastic Steven Gerrard

For a team to truly inspire to greatness there must be someone willing to take it on his/her back during testing times and inspire his team mates to press on through tribulations. No one in English football possesses this ability more than Liverpool's central midfield captain Steven Gerrard. His team have learned over the seasons that in time of trouble they can look towards captain fantastic to provide a performance that will safely see them through to earning points even in positions where it looked like all was in vain. Anyone who has watched the Premiership can vouch for the awe inspiring performances the 6 ft ,28 yr old English man displays with consistency. Whether it is a through pass, beautiful cross, perfected corner kick or jaw dropping shot on goal, Gerrard has it all. He never gives up and finds ways to punish even the stubborn of defenses often time when Liverpool is facing an almost certain defeat.

His reward for his actions has been top 4 placements in the Premiership, winning the FA Cup, Carling Cup and the glory of holding up the most coveted prize in Europe the Champions League trophy. This season is no different with Liverpool in a good position to challenge long time rivals Manchester Utd for the Premiership title. A goal against Spanish kings Real Madrid during their Champions League match up has also placed Steven's team in pole position to advance towards the finals in Rome. Many critics have felt that Liverpool's recent success has little to do with their manager's questionable team strategies and more dependent on the drive and inspirations of Gerrard.

Gerrard is what I would describe as full footballer. This means he has not only garners the physical abilities of a top footballer but has the mental maturity that entails precise football intelligence and the ability to inspire and earn the respect of his team mates as well as his opponents. Gerrard is a very versatile midfield player, he has been utilized in central midfield or on the right. He is also a very effective supporting striker. He is masterful in dead ball positions such as free kicks and corners. When it comes to shots on goal he is one of the most deadly marksmen in the business. No angle is too difficult for Gerrard to shoot. He has defied the laws of Physics with shots that have made the ball bend at the last minute to elude a grasping keeper. He has an amazing array of shots that can consist of low perfectly angle shots or spinning aerial missiles. The outcome is usually the ball ending in the back of the net. He has the intelligence and ability to control the tempo of the game from a central position. He also can control the wing executing passes that open up spaces in defense. When he is utilized as a supporting striker, he becomes a potent attacking force. Last season Benitez placed him in this role to partner with his newly acquired striker Torres. The impact was devastating to opponents defenses . There developing partnership lead to both players scoring goals almost at will.

When it comes to his leadership qualities there is no question asked. One only has to look back to the 2005 when he placed Liverpool on his back and pushed his team to overcome a 3-0 deficit to go on to overcome AC Milan to win the Champions League. This season we have seen him provided a goal or assist in lacklustre performances to ensure that his team comes away victors. His team mates share the same sentiments as Liverpool's favourite adopted son Torres made it clear that Liverpool FC is Steven Gerrard. Gerrard who suffers from injuries regularly is immediately missed and the team seems to lose a bit of energy when he is on the sidelines. This season is a dream season because Gerrard has never come closer to winning the Premiership title and has expressed that he desires nothing more at the end of the season than to win it. There will be a number of obstacles including overcoming a recent injury to achieve this, but you can be assured that Gerrard will put in a 150% to achieve his goal.

Mastering the Art of Attack...Franck Ribery

Two weeks ago German football power house Bayern Munich taught Portuguese football team Sporting Lisbon a painful lesson about Champions League knock out stages. The Germans virtually ended their opponents European title hopes with a whopping 5 goals in their first leg meeting. This dismantling had much to do with the mesmerizing attacking display of Munich's French attacking wing man Franck Ribery. He contributed with two beautiful goals as well as executing a series of tricks before floating the ball in the path of his teamate Toni for a beautiful goal.

At 5 ft 7 inches with an athletic frame, Ribery is a perfect example of the modern attacking midfielder. He uses his athletism to run along the flanks and trouble defenders with his magical footwork that includes step overs and paceful dribbles. He also has perfected the art of passing and uses his football intelligence to execute low or high passes that service frontmen with opportunities on goal. The magical foot work sometimes opens up the opportunity for him to run in on defenders and take shots on goal and if you witnessed his first goal in the game against Lisbon you would understand how valuable his goal scoring technique is to the success of Bayern.

Ribery was born in Boulongne, France and spent his early football career moving across Europe at various clubs. He did not become recognized until he moved from Turkish club Galatasaray to French club Marseille. Marseille is known for harnessing the talents of French starlets such as Drogba, Cisse and Nasri. The team was known to promote entertaining attacking football and Ribery fit in providing assists and the odd goal. He joined Marseille in 2005 and spent two seasons. He made 60 appearances and scored 11 goals. His performances earned him a spot on the French international team and he began to get attention from big clubs in other leagues across Europe.

Arsenal's manager Arsene Wenger was one of his biggest admirers and contacted Marseille on his availability. Wenger however lost interest in the pursuit when Marseille decided to place a large price for the players transfer. German giants Bayern Munich then took the opportunity to buy him for 25 million pds. Ribery immediately made an impact on the clubs performances. The German club utilized him as an attacking midfielder that dismantled defenders with beautiful skill to set up goals and take shots.

He suffered a number of injuries and his presence was immediately missed with Munich losing alot of it attacking prowess. In 08 he contributed to the club's dominance of the German football winning the Bundesliga and two German cup competitions. So far he has made 60 appearances for Munich and has scored 17 times. However the stats fail to recognize his contribution in the build up to countless of goals in his Munich career. Rumours are now spreading in the media that Ribery could be ready to move on to another challenge in another part of Europe. The likes of Manchester Utd and Barcalona have been rumoured to be probable destinations. Ribery however made public his intentions to stay at Munich until his contract expires in 2011. He did state though that he is attracted to the type of football played in England and Spain and could see himself at another major club after his contract is up.

Ribery is an extraordinary talent that has been hailed the next Zidane and I believe that we can expect more great performances for him on both the Club and international level. His movement on and off the ball is sublime. His football intelligence and athletism allows him to master the art of moving forward. His only weakness seems to be that he is prone to injury and spends extended periods of his career on the injury table. With Bayern almost certain to move into the next round of the Champions League knock out stages we should expect the French man to test his skills against his peers in Europe.

From Russia with love....Arshavin joins Arsenal

The most drawn out transfer negotiations have finally come to an end and the Russian creative player Andrie Arshavin is now officially a Gooner. Fellow fans have had to wait over 6 mths to witness the czar in red and white as his former club St.Zenith refused to sell him for less than an arm and a leg. However after a month of frustration the deal was finally concluded and Arsene Wenger and company have added an experienced player that should provide more options in the attack line. Wenger has already stated that supporters should not look at Andrei as a savior. I agree, I believe that what Arshavin brings to the table is experience and more creativity that has been lacking since the many injuries that have taken toll on half our first team squad.

It will take some time for Arshavin to get a feel of the Premiership and his new team, but when he does I expect great things from the Russian. I believe he will be able to provide that berth of energy and skill that will open up defenses for Adebayor and RVP. He can also go forth and provide goals on his own. He has been known to have quite a few tricks in his arsenal such as through passes, graceful shots and mesmerising chips. If he adapts to the team as well as Nasri and Sagna, we can expect nothing but quality from the Russian. I welcome you to my club Andrie and hope you score on your debut.

Champions League Preview: Inter Milan Vs Man Utd

In less than two months time the football world will once again turn their eyes to the most exciting club tournement in Europe. This is of course the UEFA Champions League. Gone are the group stages and now we await the opening of the knock out stages. The fixture computer did not disappoint as it presented viewers with awesome mouth watering matchups for the February opening. Liverpool VS Real Madrid, Chelsea VS Juventus, Arsenal VS Roma to name a few. All these matches show promise being the epitomy of an exhilerating performance, but only one tie has brought on mass speculation and anticipation. This tie is between the Italian Champions Inter Milan and England's football juggaurnaut Manchester Utd. It will be a battle on all forces. The techinical prowess of Inter's coach Jose Mourinho against the wit and experience of Utd's Sir Alex Ferguson. The winner of this match will move on in the competition and prove to the World that they are true contenders to the cup.

Former Chelsea manager Mourinho and Ferguson have quite a history. Mourinho managed the winning FC Porto team that knocked out Utd to go on to win the Champions League some years back. He then moved to England to take up the post of manager of Chelsea and became one of Sir Alex most competitive rivals. During Jose tenure Chelsea finally broke the glass ceiling that was held by Man Utd and Arsenal in the Premiership. Mourinho upped the tempo and level of the Premiership to the relentess battle it is seen as today. Both managers are known for their off the pitch tactics of making comments that ruffle their opponents feathers. Mourinho has already stirred the pot by disregarding the quality of his fellow countryman and FIFA player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo. Mourinho mentioned that his star striker Ibrahimovic is a much better player than Ronaldo. The outcome of this tie will rely much on the tactics decided by the managers as well as the players on the pitch.

Looking on the pitch most eyes will be turned to the two players that are mentioned above, Man Utd's Ronaldo and Inter's Ibrahimovic. Ronaldo, last season seemed to have perfected the art of attacking football. He seemed to score goals at will using either his feet or head. He hit long range shots, free kicks, heel shots and graceful headers that took his tally to 41 goals last season. What is even more impressive is that he did all this as a midfielder. His brilliant display played an integral role in Man Utd have a successful Premiership and Champions League run that earned them the title kings of Europe. Imbrahimovic was not as prolific last season. Due a number of injuries that kept him on the sidelines he managed to score 22 goals for the season. This is still an impressive tally for a top striker. This season so far both attacking players are almost level on goals. Ibrahimovic has 11 and Ronaldo 10. Both players are capable of awe inspiring moves that could change the face of the game at any moment. Ronaldo will be expected to use his speed and dribbling techniques to move pass defenders and take shots, while Ibrahimovic will be more reliant on service from the midfield, as soon as the ball touches his feet anything short of magic can happen. He is known to create incredible moves and strikes that leave his audience in amazement, creating goals by manuveuring into impossible angles.

These two players will not the only players to watch. Both teams are packed with talent on and off the bench. Utd will also be reliant on a number of experienced and talented players. Some of the players that are expected to be included in the starting line up are Berbatov, Rooney, Carrick, Ferdinand, Evra and Van De Sar. 30 Million dollar summer signing Dimatar Berbatov will be expected to service his fellow attackers with magical passes that could open up Inter's defense. Defenders will also be aware that Berbatov is also capable of carving defenders up with fluent dribbles and has a marksman precision in front of goal. Defenders will have to keep an eye on the Bulgarian and not make his languid movements fool them into thinking he is less of a threat than his team mate Ronaldo. English striker Wayne Rooney is also extremely deadly and should not be taking lightly. His work rate is almost second to none and his shots on goal usually tend to make goal keepers experience difficulty grasping the ball, leaving them vulnerble to simple tap ins that Man Utd has perfected under Sir Alex regime. In the middle of the pitch English man Michael Carrick will be expected to control the tempo of the game, limiting the movements of Inter's players. Carrick is also deadly when he moves forward to take strikers on goal just outside the box.

Evra will push forward along the left wing providing crosses into the box, he will also be expected to clean up any attacks coming forward from Inter's wingmen. One point of concern for Utd supporters will be their CB position. First team player Vidic is expected to miss the tie due to European suspension recieved during the FIFA Club World Cup and will not be partnered with Rio Ferdinand. Ferdinand is rated as one of the top defenders in the World and will be most likely partnered with you CB Evans. Evans has proven this season that he has the potential to make Vidic spot his own permanently in the future, however he will have to be up to the difficult task of keeping a close watch on Inter's attacking players, Ibrahimovic in particular who can be more than a handful infront of goal. Goal keeper Edwin Van de Sar will have to be at his best if Man Utd hope to gain success over Inter. He will be given the task of stopping proven goal scorers such as Figo, Muntari, Adriano, Ibrahimovic and Maicon to name a few from piercing his net with the ball.

When we focus on Inter speculating who will be chosen by Mourinho the task becomes difficult. Jose has a large squad of players to choose from. If he feels to play an attacking minded game he may put on the like of Ricardo Quaresma and Brazilian Mancini. However if he feels to play a more techical slower game he will place his trust in players such as Ghanan midfielder Muntari and Italian power house Mario Balotelli. I am of the opinion that Mourinho will be more cautious in his selections and be conservative in his selections leaving out Mancini and Quaresnma out of his starting lineup. I expect that he will utilize the likes of Muntari, Vieira, Maicon and Cambiasso. Muntari was one of Mourinho's first signings since he became manager at Inter. The talented Ghanan midfielder is flexible and can play in a wing position but is capable of maintaining defensive duties when opponents are on the attack. Muntari is also able to provide strikers with service as well as taking shots or tapping in crosses. He has already scored two goals for Inter and has contributed to the teams success this season.

Central midfielder Vieira should also be included if he is not injured. Vieira is Arsenal's former captain and is used to heated battles against Utd. Mourinho I believe will exploit Vieira's knowledge and experience of Sir Alex's teams to create a barrier in midfield to foil any Utd attack. Another defensive midfielder that will most likely be utilized is Argentine Cambiasso, this experienced defensive midfielder will also have to be on his top game against the attacking movements of Berbatov, Rooney and Ronaldo. He will have to be the first barrier that holds before Utd reaches Inter's defensive back line. The final key player I have included is the Brazilian wing back Maicon. Maicon can push forward down the wing to serve the strikers with crosses or use his speed and skills to press into the box and take shots on goal. He has already scored a number of goals this season.

This matchup looks to be a classic in the making. Not only are we expected to see exciting performances from the players above, but we can also look forward for surprises from other players who may take part such as Utd's young Brazilian wing back Rafael, Portuguese wing Nani and experienced players such as Ryan Giggs and Paul Scoles. Inter on the other hand could bring on former Chelsea star Crespo, Portuguese magician Figo or Brazilian forward Adriano. All this makes up for an impressive 180 minutes of football. At the moment I am not able to call the winner of the tie, however based on the recent form of Ibrahimovic I am tempted to think that Inter will be the victor. The World will just have to wait until February to see who will continue onwards to Rome.
